Newcastle United has taken a significant hit in its midfield ranks. Captain Bruno Guimaraes sustained a hamstring injury during the recent 2-1 Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur. This happened in injury time, a real blow, especially after he’d just recovered from an ankle issue. It’s a “massive blow” for the team, according to manager Eddie Howe.
Guimaraes is a central figure, somebody vital to how Newcastle plays. His absence leaves a big hole, and Howe’s immediate challenge is finding a way to compensate for his influence.
Guimaraes’ Setback: A Crucial Midfield Absence for Newcastle
The hamstring injury came on Tuesday, leading up to the FA Cup match. Guimaraes limped off the pitch, ending his involvement in the Tottenham game. Losing a player who’s key to driving the ball forward, with his physical presence in midfield, it’s tough.
Eddie Howe confirmed the timeline for his recovery. “I believe it will take a couple of months,” Howe stated. “We are likely looking at a return around the conclusion of the international break in March. This is a huge setback for us at a crucial point in the season.”
He’s upset about it, of course. Nobody wants to be on the sidelines. But it’s out of their control. The focus now is on his safe recovery and for other players to step up.
Guimaraes played a big part in Newcastle turning around some bad form. He helped them end three consecutive defeats and a five-game winless run by beating Tottenham. The team needed that resurgence, and he delivered.
Howe Navigates Deepening Injury Crisis Amidst Cup Progress
Despite Guimaraes’ injury, Newcastle managed a 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round win against Aston Villa on February 14, 2026. Sandro Tonali scored twice, and Nick Woltemade added another. Villa made it easier with Marco Bizot getting sent off early.
But the injury list doesn’t stop with Guimaraes. Sven Botman also had some back discomfort from the Tottenham game. He didn’t travel for the Villa match, which shows they’re being careful with him.
Howe shared an update on Botman: “We aren’t completely certain about either of them. Sven is experiencing some back discomfort from the match against Tottenham. We don’t believe it’s a severe injury, and he certainly won’t be out for an extended period. However, it was wise to keep him from traveling today.”
Another name on the list is Yoane Wissa, who picked up a minor injury in training the day before the Villa game. Howe mentioned, “Yoane sustained a minor injury during training yesterday. Again, it doesn’t seem serious, but he might miss a couple of matches. We’ll have to wait and see.”
And let’s not forget Lewis Miley is out too. That really limits Howe’s options in the midfield. It’s a real challenge managing so many absences.
The FA Cup win itself felt good, though. Howe said, “It felt like one of those days where you wonder if it would happen. But the players performed exceptionally well, particularly when we were up against 10 men. It’s not as straightforward as many believe to dismantle a resilient defense.” He’s right, getting a result shorthanded is never easy.
The Road Ahead: Newcastle’s Midfield Test and Recovery Timelines
So, Guimaraes is sidelined until late March, maybe returning around the end of the international break. That’s a significant chunk of the season. He’ll miss important Premier League fixtures. And any further FA Cup matches as they push through the rounds. Plus, there’s a Champions League tie against Qarabag coming up, with a potential trip to the Etihad.
His absence, combined with Miley’s injury, leaves Howe with limited choices in the center of the park. Guimaraes is the player who provides that crucial link, that physical presence and ability to move the team forward. Replacing that isn’t simple.
The recovery process is priority number one, but the team needs to find immediate answers on the pitch. Other players must seize this opportunity and step up. It’s a trying period for Newcastle, testing the depth and character of the squad. What happens over the next couple of months will tell us a lot about this team.
