Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri became a big talking point in France this week. The 18-year-old midfielder, now playing for Marseille, was involved in a controversial moment during their 3-0 Coupe de France quarterfinal win over Rennes on Tuesday night at the Stade Vélodrome.
Nwaneri received only a yellow card for a strong lunging challenge that left Rennes midfielder Glen Kamara injured. The decision surprised many watching the match. Rennes staff and players reacted with frustration right away.
The situation drew sharp criticism after the game, with the Rennes coach making his feelings clear about the referee’s call.
The Controversial Challenge and Its Fallout
The tackle happened about 22 minutes into the game. Marseille was up 1-0. Nwaneri went in hard on Kamara, catching his lower leg. Kamara’s ankle buckled from the contact.
It looked bad. Kamara, a former Arsenal academy player himself, couldn’t continue. He was substituted just nine minutes later, after 31 minutes total on the pitch. ESPN noted the challenge was described by some media as “nasty” and a “horror challenge.”
Referee chose to show Nwaneri a yellow card. No red card came out. And no VAR review happened either. French football fans and pundits have been debating the punishment severity ever since. Rennes coach Habib Beye was visibly upset. He confronted Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi right after the foul. Apparently, Beye pushed for a harsher punishment.
Marseille made a change at halftime. Nwaneri was substituted, even though he stayed on the field and avoided a red card. Probably for the best. The atmosphere was pretty heated.
No VAR, More Debate in the Cup
One reason this incident has blown up is the Coupe de France rules. There’s no VAR in the round of 16 or quarterfinals. That decision by the referee, giving only a yellow, stood. OneFootball reported the debate focused on whether the foul met red card criteria, with studs showing and Kamara’s leg buckling.
Nwaneri joined Marseille from Arsenal in the January 2026 transfer window. He’s there for first-team minutes. And he’s been getting them. He even scored on his Ligue 1 debut against Lens recently. That was a win for Marseille. He also played 67 minutes in a 2-2 draw at Paris FC just last Saturday.
So, he’s showing promise, for sure. But this challenge has put a cloud over things. It’s a learning curve, you know, for a young player getting regular senior football.
Marseille Advances, Nwaneri’s Future Discussed
Marseille went on to comfortably beat Rennes 3-0. Amine Gouiri scored early, then Mason Greenwood added another, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed it. A strong attacking performance from Marseille’s side. They move forward in the Coupe de France. Goal.com highlighted the broader discussion Nwaneri’s incident created.
Nwaneri avoided a ban for the tackle. That’s good for him. But his future and the physicality of his play are definitely being talked about now. He’s a winger, on loan to get minutes. Sometimes that means adapting to a more physical league. But this was a tough one.
It’ll be interesting to see how he responds in upcoming games. These moments shape young players. And he’s just 18.
