England fans are starting to sweat as the 2026 World Cup in North America gets closer. Gareth Southgate has a massive problem on his hands with his best players. Five key names are currently struggling with injuries or huge workloads. It is looking like the squad might arrive in the USA totally exhausted.
The latest reports suggest that Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice are at high risk. They have played too many minutes. Their bodies are starting to give up at the worst possible time for the national team. Southgate needs them fit if England wants to win the trophy.
The Big Names Missing Time
Harry Kane is the leader of this team but his fitness is a worry. He suffered a hamstring strain in March while playing for Bayern Munich against Dortmund. He missed four games and come back on April 12. He doesn’t look like he is moving at 100 percent speed right now.
And then there is Jude Bellingham over in Spain. He damaged his ankle ligaments during El Clasico back in February. He was out for six weeks. According to Sky Sports, he has already racked up 1,820 club minutes this season. That is a lot of running for a young player with a bad ankle.
Bellingham is the engine of the midfield. If he is tired, England will struggle to keep the ball. Real Madrid have used him in almost every game when he is healthy. It is a lot of pressure on his joints.
Arsenal Stars Feeling the Burn
Arsenal are right in the middle of a title race and it’s taking a toll. Bukayo Saka has played 2,450 minutes so far. That is more than almost anyone else in the England setup. He had a hamstring issue after the Brighton game on April 9. He was sidelined for three weeks which shows how much he needs a break.
But Mikel Arteta can’t afford to rest him. Arsenal need him to win the Premier League. This puts Southgate in a tough spot. He has to hope Saka doesn’t snap before the tournament starts in June. Hamstrings are tricky and they often go again if you don’t rest.
Declan Rice is in the same boat. He is the anchor for Arsenal and England. He picked up a calf knock against PSG in the Champions League on April 19. As BBC Sport reported, he is expected to play the league finale. But he has 2,300 minutes in his legs and the fatigue is showing.
“Kane and Saka are carrying massive loads. The World Cup could be a write-off without rotation.” – Gary Neville on Sky Sports.
The Long Term Injury Concerns
Trent Alexander-Arnold is the biggest question mark of the lot. He had knee surgery in January after an injury against Cardiff in the FA Cup. He has only played 1,200 minutes this whole season. That is not enough football to be match sharp for a World Cup. Liverpool have been careful with him but time is running out.
Jamie Carragher mentioned on CBS that Trent’s knee issue is a major flag. It reminds people of Virgil van Dijk a few years ago. You can’t rush a knee recovery. If he isn’t 100 percent, he might be a liability in the heat of a North American summer.
England have friendlies against Brazil and the USA in late May. These games will tell us if these players can actually handle the intensity. If they can’t play 90 minutes then, Southgate might have to make some hard cuts. He might have to look at players like Kobbie Mainoo to fill the gaps.

Why This Is Happening Now
The schedule is the main reason these guys are broken. The Champions League expanded this year and that added more games. Top players are now looking at 70 matches a season. It is too much for the human body. Data from ESPN confirms that injury rates in the Premier League are up 15 percent.
England players average over 2,000 minutes. Compare that to the French squad who mostly play in Ligue 1 and have fewer games. They look much fresher. England always seems to have this problem before a big tournament. It happened in 2022 and 2024 too.
Southgate says he is using science to manage the recovery. But science can’t fix a lack of sleep and constant travel. The flight to the USA alone will be hard on their bodies. They need a month of doing nothing but they won’t get it. The league ends and the camp starts almost immediately.
If England wants to move up from their number 4 FIFA ranking, they need these five stars. But right now it’s a race against the clock. The squad announcement is due on May 15. We will see then who Southgate actually trusts to be fit. It is going to be a nervous few weeks for everyone at Wembley.
